Why Band?

Why is band important?

Musical training helps develop language and reasoning: Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music, and songs can help imprint information on young minds.

 - (NAFME) National Association for Music Education

High school students who take music courses score significantly better on math, science and English exams than their non-musical peers, according to a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology.

- University of British Columbia

Students of the arts continue to outperform their non-arts peers on the SAT, according to reports by the College Entrance Examination Board.  A report from the College Board found that students in "music performance groups" scored 57 points higher on the critical reading, 43 points higher on the math and 58 points higher on writing  than students with no arts participation; students in music appreciation scored 62 points higher on verbal, 41 points higher on math and 61 on writing.

- The College Board, Profile of College-Bound Seniors National Report.

Physician and biologist Lewis Thomas studied the undergraduate majors of medical school applicants. He found that 66% of music majors who applied to medical school were admitted, the highest percentage of any group. 44% of biochemistry majors were admitted.

 - As reported in "The Case for Music in the Schools," Phi Delta Kappan

Is it possible to do other activities as well as band?

Yes! We have students who participate in many different programs as well as band. We are more than willing to work with you so you can participate in different activities at South Garland. Just let one of the Directors know what other activities you are in so we can solve any scheduling conflicts.

The fantastic South Garland Fine Arts & Athletic staff work together on your behave to schedule how you can attend rehearsals, games, and contests to the best of your ability while representing whatever programs you are in.

Will band cover any graduation requirements?

Yes! A minimum of two semesters of Fine Arts is required to graduate high school and band fulfill this requirement.

Two semesters of physical education (P.E.) are also required to graduate high school. Two fall semesters of Marching Band will satisfy the P.E. Requirement.

Does it cost money to be in band?

The South Garland Band Program has had the lowest band fees out of any high school band in Garland ISD!

Payment plans are available and we also have fundraising opportunities to help you raise the money for your fees.

No one will be turned away because of money! If you have any financial concerns, please let us know.
